On the look for a quick and tasty grilled chicken recipe? This Honey Garlic & Lime has lots of flavor whether marinated in advance or by just adding the marinade as the chicken grills. The marinade gives the chicken a nice slightly charred outside, while keeping the inside moist and juicy. I always try and remember to reserve a bit of the marinade to top at the very end for extra flavor along with a few squeezes of fresh lime.
Options, Substitutions and Tips!
- I used Chicken Breast, but you could substitute Chicken Thighs or even Chicken Tenderloins for this recipe.
- As mentioned in the recipe card below, use between 1.5-2lbs of chicken. My chicken was 1.7 lbs and came in 3 very thick pieces, so I sliced mine in half giving me 6 pieces of chicken in a medium thickness. Cooking time depends a lot on the thickness of the chicken! You can slice your chicken thin or leave it thick. I find that when I try to grill thin pieces of chicken, I tend to overcook and dry them out, so it just works better for me to keep them on the medium/thicker side.
- I’ve made this with and without marinating the chicken in advance. Marinating the chicken does give a stronger flavor and will also help ensure the chicken stays nice and juicy while grilling, but even when I did not marinate in advance, the flavor was still really good and the chicken was not dry. The key when you do not marinate is to continuously flip the chicken every 2-3 minutes and keep spooning the sauce/marinade on top. You can even reserve a bit for topping the chicken after you remove from the grill.
- I’ve grilled this on my outside BBQ, but also inside with my favorite Ikea (GRILLA) Grill Pan. This is not sponsored, I just really love this grill pan that I’ve had for over 10 years, use all the time, and it’s only $14.99.
- I recommend using garlic cloves, but in a pinch 2 tsp of Garlic Powder can be substituted.
- This also makes great skewers. To skewer, I cut them into consistent size cubes, took metal skewers (you can also use wood/bamboo and quickly soak them in water so they do not get charred when grilling) and then poured the marinade on top and refrigerate. Then follow the same steps from the recipe, whether you marinade or not. When you grill you will also continue to spoon the marinade on top as you cook. Here they are served with a chopped avocado salad and sweet potato fries and with the same chopped salad topped with some cooked brown rice and quinoa:
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. I’m not too picky when it comes to leftovers, but if you are, just a fair warning they will dry up a little when reheated. If I have leftovers, I prefer to not reheat and use them cold in a salad.
Honey Garlic & Lime BBQ Chicken
Chicken is grilled in a honey, garlic and lime marinade. Marinate in advance or right on the spot by spooning marinade on top while grilling, both taste great! healthy and only taking 30 minutes, perfect with any sides or added to a salad.

- 1½-2 lbs Chicken Breast
- ¼ cup Honey
- 4 cloves Garlic
- 2 Limes

Chicken and sauce can be prepped in advance and marinate or can be cooked immediately. If you have the time, marinating will result in a stronger honey, garlic and lime flavor, but both will taste great!
Mince garlic cloves. Then in a small sauce pan combine honey, the juice of 1 lime, minced garlic and soy sauce. Cook on low heat stirring until the honey dissolves and all ingredients are combined.
If marinating, place chicken breast in a ziplock bag or a container and pour sauce on top. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours for optimal results. (This can even marinate overnight).
When ready to cook, place chicken breast on grill or a grill pan. As the chicken is grilling use a spoon and pour the sauce/marinade on top of the chicken. Flip chicken every 2-3 minutes and continue to pour the marinade on top of the chicken. It typically takes about 18-20 minutes to cook however, cooking times will vary based on the heat of the grill and the thickness of chicken. If using a meat thermometer, an internal temperature of 165°F indicates that is cooked.
Remove from grill and garnish with slices of lime. Optional-squeeze lime juice on top for extra lime flavor.
